We have been serving the community of Redcliffs and invite you to read our history section to find out more about our last 100+ years. It is with pride and pleasure we continue, to serve the wonderful community we live in.
Our Library
Our library is a fantastic resource for our community and we encourage all locals to visit us - a place all booklovers can call home. Our children's books in particular are a joy and caregivers are welcome to read to children in the library - we don't practise the "silence" rule here. Young teens can also find books specially selected for them and given that we get new books every month, our adult sections always include lots of the latest releases.
As well as borrowing books, feel free to use our comfortable chairs for reading a book, reading to children or simply having a chat.
Our History
The Redcliffs Village library has a long and proud history of serving the Redcliffs community.
Having started in the local butcher's shop (presumably once it stopped selling meat) in May 1914, it then moved to the "new" brick building in 1952.
From July 1952 until 22 February 2011 the library enjoyed a peaceful existence.
Earthquakes, however, are not friendly to brick buildings and the library suffered tremendous losses including all their non-fiction section in the February quake.
Fortunately, no lives were lost.
More recently, having been damaged beyond hope in the Christchurch earthquake, the library moved to a series of temporary homes, including the Redcliffs tennis club, before our stunning new library was opened in December, 2016.
Our latest building is a wonderful addition to the Redcliffs architecture and a home we can all enjoy. Hopefully for many years to come.
Committee Members
As well as volunteering in the library itself, a wonderful team of people make sure the library remains relevant to the community it serves. Meet the team.
